The Desmet/Malone Ideology of Mass Psychosis Blames the Citizens and Not the Global Predators

We have already published a lengthy, in-depth analysis (1) of Mattias Desmet’s book The Psychology of Totalitarianism (2). Desmet proposes that a large segment of the population suffers from self-induced mass transformations, otherwise known as mass hypnosis, and popularized as “mass psychosis” by Robert Malone, MD. Whether Desmet or Malone consciously intended it, their ideology has seriously harmful effects similar to a psyops — a psychological operation — aimed at paralyzing the health freedom movement and freedom movements worldwide.
The synonymous concepts of mass formation, mass hypnosis, and mass psychosis have an obvious damaging impact on the international health freedom movement and on the cause of liberty everywhere. These concepts take our eyes off the totalitarian global predators who are taking over and exploiting humanity. They restrain us from charging these predators with criminal conspiracy if we win the battle with them. The pernicious effects of the Desmet/Malone ideology came fully into light with the recent publication of Desmet’s The Psychology of Totalitarianism and Malone’s continuing efforts in support of mass psychosis.
The strategy for undermining the people and ignoring the perpetrators is twofold:
First, mass hypnosis or mass psychosis minimizes or denies how dictators act through violent conspiracies to take over people and to crush their freedom, their free will, and their human spirit. The people themselves, and not the conspiring dictators, are to blame for totalitarianism.
Second, those who believe that there are underlying organized collaborations behind disasters such as COVID-19 policies (and even Nazi Germany) are described by Desmet as emotionally disturbed (pp. 126-128). Like the masses, these “conspiracy thinkers” focus on non-extent threats — such as organized elites, worldwide political classes, or people of enormous wealth and power — in order to relieve themselves of intense anxiety as they observe the mass psychosis around them. Worst yet, according to Desmet, these thinkers drive people into mass psychosis with their conspiracy theories (p. 137). Everybody, except the real perpetrators, is blamed.
These theories provide a double whammy against people who are fighting for their own and humanity’s liberation from the increasingly empowered and organized global totalitarians. First, the concept of mass psychosis blames the victims for their plight. Second, labeling freedom-oriented historians and political analysts as mentally disturbed and a cause of mass psychosis denigrates them. It even sets them up for police or psychiatric interventions as the totalitarians gain more power. In addition, dismissing these intellectual leaders as driven by anxiety and psychological needs to make up theories about the oppressors blinds the entire group to the identity of those oppressors.
Our experience indicates that nearly all the leading activists in the health freedom movement believe, first, that there are individuals and groups conspiring to enforce global totalitarianism, and second, that those of us writing about it are not driven by mental disturbances and not adding to “mass psychosis.”
The views of Desmet and Malone run dramatically counter to those prevailing in both the health freedom movement and the worldwide liberty movement. It requires us to make the real Desmet/Malone ideology as well-known as possible.
CONTRASTING VIEWS
In the view of Desmet and Malone, the people or masses somehow generate a mass psychosis involving helplessness, dependency, desperation, and paranoia that makes it inevitable that totalitarianism will develop among them, enabling a dictator to emerge and take advantage of them. A dictator like Hitler may be caught up in the same mass psychosis and become its victim, too, so there is no one to blame.
According to Desmet, conspiracy thinking is very destructive, and “Conspiracy thinking itself can also give rise to the emergence of a mass phenomenon (p.137). According to Malone, we shall document that there were and are huge “policy failures” surrounding COVID-19 seemingly without intentionality or malice. Once again, we have no one to blame but ourselves for suffering.
In reality, totalitarianism uses propaganda, terror, bullying, and murder to reduce the population to a helpless, dependent, and desperate state typical of victims of totalitarian dictators. This is seen in every totalitarian state. To say that nothing malicious is going on denies that people can be evil-intentioned. As for Malone’s attribution of the COVID catastrophe to “policy failures,” the globalists think COVID-19 was a great policy success! They became enormously richer and more powerful and their enemies, the constitutional democracies, became pitifully weaker.
In the view of Desmet and Malone, conspiracies are not a big part of totalitarianism. Desmet commonly dismissed the idea of conspiracies in his interviews (3). Instead, conspiracy theories, in a manner similar to mass psychosis, are generated from the people themselves who are feeling severe anxiety, confusion, and paranoia, and who try to relieve their painful feelings and “needs” by imagining conspiracies (pages 126-128).
In reality, totalitarianism has always required murderous conspiracies to gain and maintain control, even conspiring against each other and murdering their own family members or close associates (4, 5).
In the view of Desmet and Malone, mass psychosis has only existed since the Twentieth Century and explains how the group, the people, or the masses brought about Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and other modern dictators. Mass psychosis, not dictatorship, is the primary explanation of totalitarianism.
In reality, there is no such thing as mass psychosis, and there is no scientific evidence for it. Many more civilians than enemies are murdered by their dictators, even in wartime, in order to maintain their iron grip on the people. During World War II, Hitler and Stalin killed tens of millions of their own people,6 and Mao may have killed up to 100 million Chinese (7). Are all those murdered people victims of the “group” or “mass psychosis” rather than the violent conspiracies of Hitler, Stalin, and Mao?
Modern technology and not this so-called arrival of mass psychosis in the last century accounts for violent bullies now being able to organize on a global scale with the aim of global totalitarianism. Meanwhile, totalitarian empires go back several thousand years to India and China (8).
Robert Malone and Mass Psychosis
We now look at the influence and effects of Desmet’s greatest advocate and defender, Robert W. Malone, MD. Although Desmet does not use the term “mass psychosis” in his book, Malone attributes it to him, while endorsing it. According to The Expose on December 7, 2021:9
Dr. Robert Malone, inventor of mRNA vaccines and RNA as a drug, discussed the “mass formation” phenomenon during an interview last month. “Matthias Desmet, he’s a psychologist. He’s also a statistician. He’s at the University of Ghent … I think Matthias is on to something, and he calls it ‘mass formation psychosis.’ So, when he says ‘mass formation,’ you can think of this as equivalent to ‘crowd.’ So, it’s crowd psychosis,” Dr. Malone said.
Malone is the great popularizer of the term “mass psychosis,” which quickly swept through and was adopted by many in the health freedom movement.
An Egregious Example of Blaming the Masses and Not the Big Bosses
Desmet, for example, blames the people for running wild with misinformation, by which he means the official narrative. He never hints that, in fact, a very highly organized collaboration among the media, which had official disinformation centers and experts, was completely controlled. In fact, he specifically denies the possibility the media were collaborating and planning their lockstep reporting (10).
Similarly, the scientific and medical community also had their official sources of truth, all of whom continually gave bad information, the official narrative, to the public. Indeed, people who tried to criticize the narrative were thrown off social media, and doctors who voiced concern lost their jobs and had their medical licenses threatened.
We ourselves were taken down permanently from YouTube 45 minutes after we put up a video announcing our new book, COVID-19 and the Global Predators: We Are the Prey.
All mainstream sources of information compulsively repeated the CDC and WHO orchestrated globalist-driven narrative. Yet Desmet blames the people as being driven by psychological needs to believe the narrative. Yes, they were driven by a need — the survival need not contradict the official narrative, driven into everyone around them and above them as the gospel truth. Here is Desmet’s distortion of what happened; based on his mass hypnosis or psychosis theory, there are no conspiracies and no high powers running the show, and the mentally unhinged mass of people are to blame:
Interestingly, you’d expect the public narrative and measures to be adjusted (in this case, the introduction of more lenient measures) as soon as the models they’re based on are proven incorrect beyond doubt. But that’s not what happened at all. Neither public health officials nor the population dialed it back. Something caused society to collectively continue reacting in the same frenetic way as if it were acting out a pressing, psychological need. (italics in original; p. 55).
The People, Not the Brutal Dictators, Are the Ones Trying to Take Over
Desmet states, “The crowd [the mass] typically tries to impose its will on society; It seeks control over society. This has always been the case…” (pp. 126-127). By the crowd, he means a large percentage of ordinary people; but his description of them as power-crazed actually should apply instead to totalitarian dictators who create, take over, and use crowds to their own ends.
Desmet denies that the World Health Organization’s (WHO) various manipulations of the definition of human “immunity” or the WHO’s statistical manipulations that give inflated estimates of COVID deaths had anything to do with a conspiracy (p. 137). His argument often comes down to a distinction between good intentions and “malicious manipulation,” which is in the eye of the beholder. Desmet avoids labeling anything “malicious” and, in that way, discards almost all collaborations (conspiracies) that result in egregiously destructive ends.
Desmet and Malone’s viewpoint completely reverses commonsense, historical knowledge, and reality. Since the first totalitarian empires were built several thousand years ago, violent and often bloodthirsty dictators have used fear and abuse to dominate large populations. In modern times, Hitler and Stalin killed tens of millions of their people, and Mao killed up to 100 million (11). To blame the deaths of over a hundred million people at the hands of totalitarian governments “on the people” or the “masses” is so absurd that it must be driven by an agenda.
Desmet’s theory denies all conspiracies and therefore avoids holding anyone in higher authority responsible for any of the misery they impose on humanity, especially right now surrounding COVID-19 and the growing totalitarian power of the globalists. Desmet makes clear that this theory applies to Hitler and Stalin. He explains that the primary problem was the origination of totalitarianism in the crowd — that is, the people — who are then ultimately responsible for their own suffering under totalitarianism.
A second Desmet analysis identifies critics of authority as mentally disturbed. He says these critics create explanations of totalitarians inflicting organized control over the population. Because these mentally disturbed critics are driven by “severe anxiety,” “confusion,” “bewilderment,” and deep “needs,” they create “conspiracy” theories to blame others “outside oneself.” These theories provide them some relief from their self-torture. (126-128 in Desmet’s book). In fact, conspiracy thinking “fulfills the same function as mass formation (p. 128).
As we shall document, Malone uncritically and vigorously promotes Desmet’s work. We do not know if he knows of Desmet’s attack on those of us writing about the globalist assault on humanity. Without citing us, he surely must be including ourselves, Peter and Ginger Breggin (2021, September) in COVID-19 and the Global Predators: We Are the Prey and Robert F. Kennedy (2021, November) in The Real Anthony Fauci: Bill Gates, Big Pharma, and the Global War on Democracy and Public Health.
We hope Malone is unaware of and will now disavow Desmet’s psychiatric labeling and undermining of researchers and writers who are investigating globally organized assaults on humanity, and the accusation that we cause mass psychoses. This is unjust to the researchers and writers and can only protect those behind the increasing power of the global totalitarian institutions.
Desmet Responds to Us — Leave the Elites Alone…Or Else
In response to our original detailed analysis of his work, Desmet replied to us on July 30, 2022, in Dutch on his Belgium Facebook. Here is a translation of one section (12):
Indeed, I don’t think that the world is destroyed in the first place because of a great conspiracy — society is destroyed in the first place because of a certain ideology, a certain view of man and the world. It is only in the second instance that all kinds of institutions and persons build up power and get the population under their control. And the population is indeed not innocent of that. Elite and population are a reflection of each other, both determined by and gripped by the same ideology. (emphasis added)
Notice how hard Desmet scrambles to avoid one conclusion — that those in power are taking advantage of and harming those who are not.
Desmet goes on to say:
The solution to the impasse we are in is not to forcibly eliminate any elite. On the contrary: that is the recipe for self-destruction. The solution does consist in increasing the space for humanity. So is what you call ‘the counter-movement.’ This counter-movement will not be destroyed by being infiltrated by a conspiracy-controlled opposition. (emphases added)
Desmet does not define “controlled opposition,” but a good general definition is “someone who pretends to oppose the establishment while covertly serving it.” Lenin, who led the Russian Communist revolution, said, “The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves.” (13) Informants are an aspect of controlled opposition, and controlled opposition is probably used by all governments, most certainly the United States (14). Progressives and Communists, including the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), use controlled opposition as one of their most powerful tools (15).
Given how common and powerful the use of controlled opposition is, how can Desmet tell us our movement cannot be destroyed or impaired by controlled opposition? He cannot possibly know that. He is simply voicing another aspect of the agenda of obfuscating and blinding us to our enemies and their tactics.
Desmet is so determined to protect “elites” that he almost seems to threaten us when he warns not to “forcibly eliminate any elite” because “that is the recipe for self-destruction.” We have never promoted illegal force or violence, but we would hope the freedom movement will use every possible legal force, including charges of conspiracy in the courts, public opinion, and the ballot box, to distemper those elites who are trying to destroy our constitutional democracies and our individual lives.
In an email to us on August 8, 2022, after we published our criticism of his work, Desmet emailed us with a copy to Malone:
We live in times in which humans living together dehumanizes. That is the essence of totalitarianism, a profound dehumanization of human interactions. There is no answer to this tendency than to remain humane ourselves.
Desmet’s responses, the one on his Facebook and the other by email lead to the conclusion that we cannot and should not fight back against totalitarianism. Notice that the origin of totalitarianism is, once again, “human living together dehumanizes.” In a book supposedly about totalitarianism, Desmet ignores and indeed rejects the most relevant reality that totalitarian dictatorships, and not crowds or masses, bring about totalitarian societies that are wretchedly dehumanizing to people.
Desmet’s theme of ignoring the central problem of totalitarianism — totalitarian governments run by dictators — is repeated throughout his book. The only solution he provides to totalitarianism is to improve ourselves — with no mention of standing up and fighting against totalitarianism.
The effect of Desmet’s agenda is to deflect any tendencies to blame or to hold responsible members higher up in the global collaboration that has been so damaging to billions of people and nearly destroyed the societies and economies of the Western constitutional democracies.
Malone: Even the Nazi Leaders Are Not to Blame
On his own substack on December 9, 2021, Malone described mass psychosis, much as Desmet does, as a creation of the masses that creates the grounds for totalitarianism (16):
CROWD PSYCHOSIS
The conditions to set up mass formation psychosis include lack of social connectedness and sensemaking and large amounts of latent anxiety and passive aggression. When people are inundated with a narrative that presents a plausible “object of anxiety” and a strategy for coping with it, then many individuals group together to battle the object with a collective singlemindedness. This allows people to stop focusing on their own problems, avoiding personal mental anguish. Instead, they focus all their thought and energy on this new object.
Imagine they do all this to themselves through their own mass psychosis — and without a totalitarian leader doing anything to them.
In The Expose, Robert Malone is quoted, confirming his support for the wildest of Desmet’s ideas (17):
“It really is hypnosis. This is what happened to the German people. If you live in Europe, or you have a relative who’s a holocaust survivor, or also if you’ve lived behind the Soviet Union curtains, Eastern Europe, etc. This is a fundamental problem that people have is understanding how can, for instance, the German people—who are highly educated, and very liberal in the classic sense of western thinking, people – how could they go so crazy, so deep into crazy land that they were doing what they did to the Jews? How could this happen to civilized people? And this [mass psychosis] is the explanation for that,” said Dr. Malone.
Notice the culprit: Not the viciously conspiring, violent German leadership but the otherwise remarkably good German people who suffered a mass psychosis.
Desmet is very specific in absolving the Nazi leadership in his book. They, too, are victims of this mysterious, scientifically undocumented, mass hypnosis in the form of self-hypnosis (p. 140 and elsewhere).
The Germany Psychiatric Murder Conspiracy
Desmet and Malone’s ideology lends itself so readily to psychiatric abuse that it is worthwhile examining the role of a successful conspiracy to commit mass murder perpetrated by psychiatrists that helped organize and develop the ideology and machinery of the Holocaust.18
Contrary to Desmet’s rejection of the importance of conspiracies leading up to and within Nazi Germany, before Hitler came to power, psychiatrists and lawyers were planning ahead even before 1920 for how to exterminate “lives not worth living” or “useless eaters,” people who drained the collective of its resources.
Organized psychiatry centered in Berlin carefully planned the extermination of nearly all its mental patients, while pediatricians also killed disabled children, and adult doctors cooperated in killing the chronically ill. The murder program began without known authorization from Hitler before the Holocaust. It was first implemented in the state mental hospitals, and then, with careful planning by Berlin professors of psychiatry, free-standing euthanasia (mass murder) centers were built throughout German. Potential victims were written up on euthanasia forms, the Berlin professors approved them, and the victims were sent to euthanasia centers where they were gassed to death in fake showers.
The psychiatric murder program was a highly organized, very bureaucratic conspiracy for mass murder. While most of it was secret, bear in mind that conspiracies do not require secrecy, as Desmet states (p. 124). Under the law in the U.S. (and also Europe), “a conspiracy is an agreement between two or more people to commit an illegal act, along with an intent to achieve the agreement’s goal” (19). The murder of the mental patients required the cooperation of a significant portion of the psychiatric profession, including all its mental hospital directors and its Berlin professors.
Several observers at the Nuremberg Trials for doctors stated that without the psychiatric murder program providing the feasibility and acceptability of mass murder, the Holocaust may not have taken place. The psychiatric murder program, which killed an estimated 100,000 people, provided the model for the murder center, the technology of gas, and the subterfuge of shows. When Hitler stopped the murder program, one recently built “euthanasia” center was converted into a Holocaust facility, technology from the others was shipped to Poland to build extermination camps, and the first director of an extermination center was the head of a closed psychiatric murder center.
I was invited to give a plenary presentation on this murder program in Germany at the only conference on Medicine in the Third Reich in Cologne and then published a detailed paper in the Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine in Europe, which thoroughly documents everything in this section (20).
After the conference, I visited behind the iron curtain in East Berlin for a day where the demoralizing effects of totalitarianism were apparent in the eyes, carriage, and aloneness of so many people, reminding me of the same appearance of state mental hospital patients in the U.S. in giant lock-ups in state hospitals. The effects of totalitarian oppression are similar everywhere, crushing the spirit and vitality of the victims, burying their souls out of their reach, and leaving them devoid of the will or energy to resist. These dreadful effects are forced upon people rather than generated by them in a “mass psychosis.”
Ignoring What’s Really Needed — Stronger Sovereign Constitutional Democracies
Desmet suggests we need to look to ourselves for the solution. By this, Desmet does not mean peacefully resisting brutal authority with utter determination as promoted by Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Desmet means we must ignore the brutal authorities (the elite) who will continue to trample on us and hope we can somehow all get along.
Finally, Desmet, like all globalists and their apologists, ignores the one true way to stand up to and foil totalitarianism — to strengthen and rebuild the constitutional republics of the world, including the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and to reconstitute the nations of the European Union into separate, powerful, patriotic, sovereign republics in defiance of globalism.
